The death of 66 children linked to four brands of cough syrup is been investigated by police in The Gambia.

The death of 66 children in The Gambia is alarming. The tragic deaths have been in connection with some particular brands of cough syrup imported from India. It is thought that the death of the sixty six children is because they were given the cough syrup in question.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has issued a global warning due to the suspected four cough syrups leading to the death of innocent children in the Gambia. These four cough syrups are believed to have been produced by an Indian pharmaceutical company, Maiden Pharmaceuticals. Also, the safety of these cough syrups is highly questionable.

Investigations have been launched by the Indian Government over the weird situation. In spite of this, The Minister of Health, Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh is been asked to resign by a growing number of angry Gambians. Importers are also not excluded as there are growing calls for them to be prosecuted.

A mother of one of the 66 children who died due to the syrup said ‘’ my child could not pass urine after taking the medicine even though the cough stopped. I later on took him to the hospital, he was operated on and could not survive’’

A good step has been taken by the Gambian health officials who are moving from house to house, markets and the various pharmacies across Gambia to gather all the suspected cough syrup. So far, a large number of these deadly cough syrups have been retrieved.

President Adama Barrow has expressed his utmost regret to the tragedy and has promised to leave no stone unturned. The police is also working diligently in order to bring the truth to bear.

The products identified as toxic cough syrups are Promethazine Oral Solution, Magrip N Cold Syrup, Promethazine Oral Solution and Kofexmalin Baby Cough Syrup.
